Papyrus dates back for four thousand years. The advent of paper, as we know it today, resulted in a rapid decline and virtual halt in both its production and use. The result being that production has remained the same exotic and mysterious art that it was all those years ago. It’s uniqueness and rarity make giving it as a gift all the more special. It is made from ‘Cyperus papyrus’ a reed plant growing on the banks of the Nile. Thinly cut strips of the reed are placed in two layers vertically and horizontally, pressure is applied to fuse them together, and finally they are dried and ready to be painted upon. Images are very often painted in golds, blues, blacks and reds.
The top image is an enlargement of the small figure to the right of the boats left-hand figurehead (see above). Considering the rough texture of the papyrus itself, the attention to detail is remarkable (the original image is just 9cm tall and 13.5cm wide) We have literally thousands of papyrus prints available in all sizes (framed and un-framed).
